New book on patching, new photo gallery for kids who patch, and a huge giveaway!

Patchland Adventures: Camping at Mimi's Ranch

Patchland Adventures: Camping at Mimi’s Ranch

Updated:  Thank you to everyone that entered!!  The winners, who were chosen this evening at random, are Jasmine and Kat.  You both should be getting an email shortly.  I’ll post links to the gallery as soon as I get it put together.  (I’m closing comments on this post now).

Carmen Swick, author of “Patchland Adventures: Fishing with Grandpa” (2012 winner of the Seal of Excellence Award in the Children’s Book category), has just released her second Patchland Adventures book, “Camping at Mimi’s Ranch”.  Both books follow the adventures of Preston, a boy who has amblyopia, and his dog Beau.  They combine a realistic portrayal of amblyopia and the struggles involved with patching, with imaginative tales of Patchland, the place that Preston and his dog visit at bedtime when Preston sleeps with a patch under his pillow.

So we’re doing two things to help her celebrate her new book:  First, we’re kicking off a new photo gallery of kids who are patching!  Secondly, Carmen has teamed up with Peeps Eyewear and Patch Palz to put together a great giveaway for two lucky kids who patch.  This is a fantastic giveaway package that really celebrates the positive and even fun aspects of patching and wearing glasses.

The Giveaway:

There will be two winners, each will receive:

Books 1 and 2 of Patchland Adventures!

Patchland Adventures: Fishing with Grandpa by Carmen Swick

  1. My little one loves finger painting and play doh when wearing a patch. She has to patch for four hours a day at the moment and is such a little trooper with it. She makes me feel proud every day 🙂

  2. I have liked the Peeps Eyewear and Patch Pals pages on Facebook but can’t find Patchland Adventures? Also, no photos for us, we’re not comfortable with that.

  3. He likes to be watching Blue’s clues when I put it on his eye. It its a great distraction, also it makes his weak eye work. I call that a win/win, even if I don’t win that awesome shirt for him. Those books look really good.

  6. My son is 23 months old and has just stopped fighting me on patching. He loves to watch Dora on the IPad when he is patched- but also likes to play with his friends and sisters and just be a boy! I’ve liked the 3 pages on Facebook (and requested to be a friend on one!). Those are great sites, I’m happy just to find them! I will be sending a photo soon.

  10. My son Billy, has been patching for a year and at his last check-up, we got great news that he had some improvement!!!!! He wears his patch all day except during gym or playing outside. We have 4 patches from Patch pals and it has made patching so much easier and more fun for him. The kids at school are always excited to see which patch he will wear. This is so great because I had anxiety about him being teased or just feeling different and strange but instead it has been an adventure for him and thus a blessing for a worrying Mommy;)

  11. My son, Easton (age 2) loves to do just about anything and everything while patching, considering he patches 8 hours a day. Morning cartoons are a great distraction while I put the patch on and then we count to 10 together while I press and hold to get the adhesive to warm up on his face. Now he will touch his patch and count to 10 on his own! 🙂

  12. I also just emailed you a pic of Easton while patching. I think this is an awesome contest… one book would be great, both is even better and the patching stuff is just over the top! Bravo! Your website continues to amaze me Ann, thanks for all that you do for this children’s vision community!!!

  16. My son loves to read, do puzzles, play with action figures and sing while patching. If it were strictly up to him, though, he’d just sit and watch Blue’s Clues, Go Diego Go, and Bedtime for Frances all day long. 🙂 He has been patching for 10-12 hours per day (for the past three months), but just got the green light to start patching only 6-8 hours per day!
