I was just sent this question, and have no experience with this, so I thought I’d see if anyone else had dealt with this:
My daughter has been crossing her right eye for about six months and it is getting progressively worse. We finally got in to the children’s hospital and the doctor was shocked to find that the eye she is crossing is her stronger eye. Essentially she is favoring her weaker eye. Do you know of any other parents whose children did this? The doctor said it made no sense.
Her prescription is
Left eye
SPH: +3 CYL: +.5 Axis 90Right eye
SPH +3.5 CYL +1 Axis 90
I’m wondering what else the doctor found during the visit and what the suggested game plan was to help.

Jason, the doctor suggested that we try glasses for three months then return for another exam and talk about our options. He said he wanted to see if the glasses would help her eyes align. He did not really tell me much beyond that.
Very rarely she crosses the other eye but most of the time it is the eye that he said is stronger. She did not cross the stronger eye while we were there.
Here are the numbers on her script:
Left eye
SPH: +3 CYL: +.5 Axis 90
Right eye
SPH +3.5 CYL +1 Axis 90

This is something that I’ve seen, though it is the exception. And although I realize I don’t have the full information from the exam, it sounds like the game plan is solid with the glasses and frequent monitoring. I don’t know that I would have made a big deal about the stronger vs. weaker eye crossing. As Corrie states below from her daughter’s example, sometimes the eyes just don’t make sense when you look at the numbers.

What exactly did the doctor mean by the weaker versus the stronger eye. Is he referring to the prescription that she needs in the glasses or is he referring to visual acuity, which I don’t believe he would have been able to test at this point. Our daughter has had crossed eyes since birth. Initially, they were both crossing and she had surgery at nine months old, and the left eye started crossing back in. That said, she has a stronger prescription in the right eye (her eye that does not turn in) than she has in the left eye. For the most part, the left eye remains straight with the glasses on, but as soon as you take her glasses off, it turns right in. The more I have studied about the eye and various eye problems, the more I am amazed at how complicated our vision really is and what all has to work together in order for us to be able to see anything at all. I would guess that if the glasses do not align your daughter’s eyes that you will need to start doing some patching to help the brain realize that the eye that turns in is useful and to force it to work. It’s great that you were able to catch it so early!

Corrie, thanks for your input. I am so new to this and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. I have never needed glasses and it has been a source of stress for me. I think that part of it is that I am a single mom and have no one to talk to these things about and when the eye doctor acted confused it worried me a bit.
He said that he expected the eye she was crossing to be the eye she did not see well out of but that that was not the case. I think I will have more questions for them next time especially since Dagny will have her glasses by then. Three of my friends were patched as children so at least I know some adults who went through that but only one of them has aligned eyes as an adult.

Hi Mom of Dagny, I completely understand the feeling! Although both my husband and I wear glasses, we were very overwhelmed dealing with our daughter’s vision problems. She has had it since birth and she is now three and it seems like just now that I feel like we have a handle on things. Not to discourage you in any way, I just don’t want you to feel alone in feeling overwhelmed! If you have any other questions as you make the adjustment to glasses and any other treatment that your doctor recommends, this is a great place to ask any question! And there is no question that you can ask that is insignificant! All the best to you and your little Dagny!!
