Photo of the day: Pete the Patch Man

Elizabeth Rapihana shared this photo on our facebook group.  She found the Marvel Infinity War version of the Thor action figure, who happens to be sporting an eye patch.  Now, Thor has become “Pete, the Patch Man!”  Pete brings little gifts of joy to kids who have to wear eye patches.44573215_10156071858829217_2334301681560322048_n

Hidden picture game, for little eyes style

It’s time to play every parent of a child in glasses’ favorite game!  This cute little stinker has decided to play a game of hide and seek with his glasses.

Your stories: “glasses make her the little person she was always meant to be”

Kaisa shared this in the For Little Eyes facebook group and was kind enough to give me permission to share it here – Ann Z

I want to share my journey as a parent to any new parents in this group. I was devastated at first when I heard that our beautiful little firecracker needed glasses when she was a little over two. Hearing that she is severely farsighted (hyperopic) was a tough blow – surprisingly tough – even though she did not suffer and the fix was easy. I researched the issue like crazy, obsessed over the diagnosis and worried about what her future entailed as a bespectacled little lady. I need not have worried.

We may not know how her condition will develop as she grows (it may or may not get better or even disappear; the science is incomplete at best and our eye doctor says she has seen both), but she has taken to her glasses like a fish to water. They are simply a non-issue, both to her and to us, her parents. She sees much better and has never taken them off. Incredibly enough she is also fully functional without them, but they are basically always on.

My own journey with this has gone from shock to denial and then very swiftly to acceptance. I was surprised by how fast, furious and deep my reaction was. I guess that it is simply because we love so deeply as parents and because we want the best for our children.

To any parent going through this right now: do get informed and do fight for the best care for your child. But know that it gets better and easier so much faster than you think when you’re in the deepest trenches of (well…) grief. You accept and embrace your little one’s new look so quickly, and you find yourself celebrating the fact that they are getting the help they need.

In the case of our daughter, the glasses make her the little person she was always meant to be. In fact, the very first thought in my mind when I saw her wearing her new glasses for the first time was this: “now she is a CHARACTER, not just my little kid.” I found this thought deeply reassuring and comforting.

In the meantime our daughter has started daycare in a new group where 30% of the kids have glasses making a non-issue even less so.

With warm greetings from Switzerland,

– Kaisa

A quick PSA about kids in glasses

Henry has a few bits of important information that he’d like to share about wearing glasses:

Henry is three and has worn glasses since he was two for farsightedness.  Huge thanks to Henry and his mother, Morgan Fauber for sharing this!!

New: For Little Eyes Glossary

I’ve put together a glossary of terms that have to do with children and vision issues. They include parts of the eye, vision issues and conditions, parts of glasses, other treatments, and parts of the glasses prescription.  I’ve tried to keep the definitions relatively understandable for people without medical degrees.  I’ve also linked to other posts about the topic and to other websites with more information. Please let me know if there are other terms I should add.

You can get to the glossary under the “Frequently Asked Questions” menu or by clicking on the image below.

A cat-person’s guide to finding glasses that fit your cat

After 10 years of writing about children who wear eyeglasses, I’ve come to the realization that there is a much more pressing need out there:  cats in glasses.

It’s a question that I hear over and over again – How will I ever find glasses to fit my cat?  Why did someone post that admittedly adorable cat meme when those glasses don’t fit at all?!?  If you’re wondering how to find glasses to fit your cat, you’re not alone.  A good understanding of how glasses should fit your kitty’s face is something every cat person should have. Sadly, it can be hard to find memes, photos, gifs, or drawings that show a cat with well-fitting glasses.

drawing-854034_1280

The glasses on this cat fit, dare I say it, purrrfectly!

Fit is crucial. Glasses that fit well stay put, are more comfortable, and frankly they look more attractive.  Glasses need to fit your cat today so we never want to size up for growth.  Bigger is definitely not better when it comes to frames. They slip and slide out of place begging to be ripped off and chucked on the floor and batted around until they get lost behind your refrigerator or under the couch.

[visual description: white cat pulling its glasses off]

The first step we use when trying to see if frames fit is to check lens widths.  When you place a frame on your cat, if the cat doesn’t scratch you immediately and run off, bend down to look directly into their face to get the best idea of fit (and then move out of the way of their claws – fast!).  You are trying to center their eye both horizontally and vertically.

Cat-eye frames on a cat’s eyes.

The bridge is the portion of the frame that spans between the lenses over the nose.  Frames are designed to be proportioned but faces vary and so the shape of the lens impacts the bridge width. This means that cats with wider noses may not be able to get a good fit with a rectangle frame. But you know what, if your cat hasn’t attacked you yet and the glasses stay on his face, maybe just quit while you’re ahead.

Last you want to look at the temples.  On a cat, the temples just kind of sit along side the face and are useless, but they shouldn’t be too long.  Your cat should be able to roll around in the dirt and lay across the keyboard of your computer without the earpiece bumping the surface and shifting the frames.

This handsome cat is showing off good-fitting glasses.  Nice choice of color, too, there, kitty!

These glasses are way too big for this sweet tabby’s face

Who fit these frames for this cat? They probably fit the kitty above this one, too. They are much too wide and don’t fit her nose at all.  The cat-optician should  be ashamed.  Bad, kitty-optician!

tumblr_mgzraodzeu1r847lao1_500

This hipster cat’s glasses fit well on the nose, but may be a little on the big size, but I hear that’s how the hip kits like to wear their glasses these days.

tenor

These glasses are much too small for this kitten.

cat_feline_kitty_whiskers_black_hat_spectacles_eye_glasses_moustache-600916

This cat has excellent taste in neckwear, hats, and facial hair.  Also, his glasses fit well.

giphy1

Your kitten should be able to shake her head back and forth and not have the glasses slip down her nose.  These lenses are too big for kitty, but at least they stay up!

giphy2

This cat appears to have fish instead of  eyes and should be seen by an kitty eye doctor immediately.

tumblr_lvggn3w3qn1r4xjo2o1_500

These glasses are a little too big for this cat. But, I don’t know, the cat is in space and so maybe there aren’t a lot of options there.

terriblecats

These are the worst cats! The glasses don’t fit that well, either.

This is not a cat.  But his eyes are well-centered in these glasses.

Happy April 1!

10 year anniversary Glasses Book giveaway!

Added March 20, 2018: Congratulations to the winners: Carla, Audrey, Sarah, and Heather!!!

In honor of our 10 year anniversary, I’m doing a giveaway of the Glasses book.  Glasses is my board book for young kids in glasses.  It was inspired in part by the reactions to the photo galleries on this site – I heard from so many parents that their kids were more likely to wear their glasses after seeing photos of other kids their age who also wore glasses.

Glasses has photos of babies and toddlers in glasses along with a simple rhyming text about kids and glasses.  You can read some reviews here and here and here.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this post and tell me how you found the For Little Eyes site.  Make sure that when you leave a comment, you include your email address (in the email field) so that I can get in touch with the winners.  I’ll use a random generator to choose 4 winners.

Throwback Thursday – 10 years of For Little Eyes

10 years ago, when Zoe was still just a toddler, I opened up a wordpress blog post editor and started to write…

So your toddler needs glasses?

My daughter Zoe got glasses at the age of 14 months to correct strabismus due to her being far-sighted.

first day
Zoe’s first day in glasses. The glasses came off shortly after this picture was taken.

It’s been 3 months (is that all? seems like so much more) now that she’s had her glasses and she’s doing well with them, but I still find myself wanting to connect with other parents of young toddlers with glasses. How do you deal with your kid flinging their glasses off? How is it going in daycare with other kids curious about your child’s glasses? How do you know if the glasses are helping? When will she learn how to put the glasses on herself?

If only there were some way of connecting with other parents in situations like ours – some way of reaching across the geographic distance – some kind of interconnected network of communication – an “internet” if you will. Wait…

And with that, I started this site.  In those 10 years, this site has had 3 name changes, over 700 posts, and more than 6,000 comments.  The associated facebook group now has over 21,000 members.  Zoe’s had at least a dozen pairs of glasses and probably the same number of prescription changes, one eye surgery, and countless eye doctor appointments.  But she can see well, and she still rocks her glasses.

So how about you? How has your journey gone since your child got their glasses?
