Samsmama’s post yesterday about Sam breaking his glasses got me to thinking about how long we can really expect frames for our kids to last. I know I was surprised when we hit 6 months with Zoe’s frames, and no irreparable damage (though many, many trips to the store for minor repairs and adjustments). ZoeContinue reading “on the durability of glasses”

surgery redux
I wanted to write up a post on the surgery – mostly writing out things that I had wanted to know before the surgery, just in case someone else is facing the prospect and is wondering what’s in store. Obviously, the surgery experience will differ for everyone, but there are certain to be commonalities. ApologiesContinue reading “surgery redux”
distractions (blog update)
In order to distract myself from the surgery these past couple of nights after Zoe went to bed, I did a bit of clean up on the blog as well as around my house (nervous energy anyone?). A couple of changes then: Books for kids – I’ve linked to worldcat.org, it’s kind of a meta-libraryContinue reading “distractions (blog update)”
surgery tomorrow – updated
So tomorrow is the big surgery day. We’ll be getting up at the crap of dawn to get to the Eye Institute by 5:30 in the morning. Actually, “crap of dawn” might be misleading since it implies that the sun might actually be close to coming up at that point. I’m trying to stay calmContinue reading “surgery tomorrow – updated”
seeing through their eyes
I wanted to point everyone to this post by MotherhoodandPotatoes on her blog – she’s the mom of C (scroll down near the bottom of the gallery for C’s picture) and a frequent commenter. She writes about having her optometrist put lenses over her eyes to simulate C’s farsighted prescription. I love the idea ofContinue reading “seeing through their eyes”
repsonses
Bit of of a random train of thought post today. Teagansmom’s comment on my last post (her #11 about wanting to scream the next time someone asks how you know they needed glasses) got me thinking about those responses we always hear from people about our kids’ glasses. Yesterday, Zoe and I were at theContinue reading “repsonses”
you might have a young kid with glasses…
You might have a young kid in glasses if: You can spell “pediatric ophthalmologist” without pausing to looking it up. Your child has a tan line across the bridge of her nose from wearing glasses outside. You have multiple glasses repair kits and cleaning cloths around the house. When your doctor asks if your childContinue reading “you might have a young kid with glasses…”
questions
MotherhoodandPotatoes asked for the questions we asked at Zoe’s eye appointment about the surgery, so here they are: Would bifocals or a stronger prescription help? We talked about the possibility of bifocals, but she really felt like it wasn’t a problem of Zoe crossing her eyes more up close, or that a change in prescriptionContinue reading “questions”
how did you know?
It’s one of the most common questions we get when people ask us about Zoe’s glasses: how did we have any idea that she needed the glasses? At first, I got tired of answering that question so many times, but then it occurred to me that many of the people asking were parents, worried thatContinue reading “how did you know?”
glasses aren’t enough
Zoe had another eye appointment today, this time to follow-up on her new prescription. Unfortunately, while the doctor (and I) could see that the glasses were helping with her eyes, as the doctor said, it was only better, not perfect. As in all the other appointments, the doctor had Zoe look at a toy upContinue reading “glasses aren’t enough”
Glasses for children with Down syndrome
Knowing how few choices there are for frames for little kids — and that’s with us having a great children’s eye glasses store with better selection than most places — I can only imagine how much more difficult it must be to find good frames if your child has Down syndrome. Children with Down syndromeContinue reading “Glasses for children with Down syndrome”
little crossed eyes
Looking back, I’ve realized that I’ve taken fewer pictures of Zoe, and shared even fewer online. I’m pretty sure that this is largely because of her crossing her eyes, I’ve been more conscious about how she looks. Not that I’m ashamed of her, but I’m feeling self-conscious about whether I should have tried to getContinue reading “little crossed eyes”
6 months of glasses in numbers
too many to count: number of visits to the eye glasses store for adjustments 6 or 7: the number of lens cleaning cloths scattered throughout the house for all of Zoe’s glasses cleansing desires (we also have a box of disposable cleaning cloths to help clean our glasses after her “cleanings”) 5: number of lensesContinue reading “6 months of glasses in numbers”
putting the library degree to good use
Zoe had her ophthalmologist appointment on Friday. I’d noticed that her eyes were crossing again, even with glasses, so I was expecting her prescription to increase, and indeed, it did. As her ophthalmologist was writing out her new prescription, she warned us that “this is going to look like a big change in her prescription.Continue reading “putting the library degree to good use”
