The Pediatric Ophthalmologist is great for explaining why and how to treat our little ones eye conditions, but I found it wasn’t enough information. I wanted, no wait, I needed more information, more support, more advice. There are various things you can do, but these are some that I, as a mom, would recommend. 1.Continue reading “You’re child has a vision impairment, now what???”

It’s not easy to treat with Atrophine drops, but worth the effort.
It is not easy to put eye drops into a wriggling 2 year old who is screaming “NO MOMMY IT HURTS.” We have it down to an art. She chooses the “treat” for being brave. My hubbie and I both wash our hands. Then I pick Elly up and sit on a chair. I holdContinue reading “It’s not easy to treat with Atrophine drops, but worth the effort.”
Your 4-eyes is BEAUTIFUL
Live with Regis and Kathy are doing a Beautiful Baby contest in connection with Parenting Magazine. As I was glancing at their entries already posted, I was very disappointed. Our children are severely underrepresented. I did not see ANY babies and toddlers with glass. And our children ARE in my opinion the cutest darn kids inContinue reading “Your 4-eyes is BEAUTIFUL”

What would you say?
A friend lent me her February copy of Parenting Early Years. On page 79, there is an article called Healthy Ever After. One topic discussed is vision. The article says that “children may not complain about near-sidedness until they’re school age, but it can be detected as early as 3, says Dr. Dankner.” The goContinue reading “What would you say?”
Pay attention to light
Learn from my mistake – pay more attention to light. The other night Elliana came running out of our bathroom and into our lowly lit bedroom. She smacked right into the corner of our bed and bruised her arm. I felt SOOOOO bad. The bed has always been there and is big and wood colored. Continue reading “Pay attention to light”
I need to vent about repairs
We have only had our Hush Puppies frames with cable temples 3 months and already the cable plastic has ripped and is coming apart. If you read my post about getting the glass – you know I am already not the happiest with Lange Eye Care. Since then, I have found an amazing one. BecauseContinue reading “I need to vent about repairs”
Tips for making the most of your child’s reading experience
I know that the majority of information we take in is done through our eyes and that providing children with literacy-rich environments and activities at an early age has significant benefits. But how can you give children the experiences they need, when they have a vision impairment? Here are some quick tips. Please ad more,Continue reading “Tips for making the most of your child’s reading experience”
The highs and lows of having a toddler with vision challenges
I hit an all time low this week. Personally inflicting pain upon my child daily is very tough on the heart. Not only that, but I see her struggle daily trying to read books by nuzzling her face as close as she can to see the words and pictures. Today, we had to leave theContinue reading “The highs and lows of having a toddler with vision challenges”
Activities to do with your toddler when patching or wearing glasses!
Our Ophthalmologist encouraged us to make sure patching time was active learning time. This encourages both sides of the brain to interact and is better for this age than traditional eye exercises. One-on-one activities will help strengthen our children’s eyes as well as providing a strong educational foundation. We found it also helped keep the patchContinue reading “Activities to do with your toddler when patching or wearing glasses!”
Patching vs Atropine Drops
Since we have patched for many months and struggled with keeping it on daily, our PO recommended Aptropine drops. The Atropine blurs the near vision in the better-seeing eye and has statistically shown the same improvements in Amblyopia patients. The Pros of the drops is that the children do not have an option to takeContinue reading “Patching vs Atropine Drops”
Our typical Visit to the Ophthalmologist
In the car on the way to the Ophthalmologist, Elly and I talk about what will happen in the Doctors Office and how I expect her to behave. Our Pediatric Ophthalmologist sees around 60 children each day she is in the office so sometime the waits are long. We are now on an every 2-4Continue reading “Our typical Visit to the Ophthalmologist”
Make it!
I have found if my toddler helps me make it, she is more likely to take more ownership over it and as a result take more care in it. We have made doll beds, doll clothes, skirts and jumpers for her, a bed quilt, wall art, and even a rug for her bedroom. Here areContinue reading “Make it!”
Is a vision plan worth it? One mom’s perspective.
GLASSES ARE EXPENSIVE!!! We purchased a vision plan this year because we knew that my husband, daughter, and I would all need glasses. Luckily his work offered a plan and we figured we would try it out. My pediatric ophthalmologist (covered with health care plan- thank goodness) looked at the optometrists and said that sheContinue reading “Is a vision plan worth it? One mom’s perspective.”
