March 15, 2011 will be the 3rd birthday of Little Four Eyes! It feels a little like a birthday of one of my kids, amazing that it’s been that long, and at the same time surprising that it’s only been 3 years. I do love this community and all the support and help and storiesContinue reading “Help Little Four Eyes celebrate our 3rd Birthday!”

Link round up – March 1, 2011
I’ve come across a pretty random assortment of links recently, on topics of vision therapy, cataracts, and a do-it-yourself iPhone app for vision testing. Questions for doctors – Stewart Snippets recently learned that her 2 year old son has lamellar cataracts. She wrote a wonderful list of questions for her son’s doctors. The questions areContinue reading “Link round up – March 1, 2011”
the wings on the fly
Zoe went in for her first appointment since she started patching. She’s been patching 4 hours every day for 7 weeks. She’s certainly told me multiple times that she doesn’t want to wear a patch, but to her credit, she’s worn the patch every single day without fail. I was hoping we’d see some progressContinue reading “the wings on the fly”
Reader request: anyone dealing with a young child in glasses and hearing aids
I just saw a question posted on the Little Four Eyes facebook group. Amy is hoping to connect with others who have a young child who wears both glasses and hearing aids, and wondering how to get her son to wear both. Anyone out there dealing with the same thing? Leave a comment here, orContinue reading “Reader request: anyone dealing with a young child in glasses and hearing aids”
bribes?
I see a lot of comments and questions from parents with kids just starting out with glasses wondering if they should use bribery to get their child to wear their glasses, or feeling guilty for bribing their child. I’m betting that a lot of us used bribery in the beginning to help our children getContinue reading “bribes?”
you know you have a kid in glasses…
I did this a long time back, but thought it would be fun to add to the list. So, you know you have a kid in glasses when… your child owns at least one shirt with a character wearing glasses. at least one of your child’s dolls, bears, or other stuffed animals has it’s ownContinue reading “you know you have a kid in glasses…”
Cute video: peek a boo with glasses
Jack’s Journey just posted a video of her son Jack playing peek a boo with his glasses. It’s very, very cute!
A sticky situation
After a couple of weeks of wearing the Ortopad patches that we got from the doctor’s office, Zoe asked for patches that were a bit “sparklier.” The doctor’s office only had the boy patterned patches, which are actually pretty cool – space ships, and pirates, and airplanes – but still, she’s the one wearing theContinue reading “A sticky situation”
New eyecare links on the resources page
I’ve recently learned about, and subsequently added some new links on the resources for parents page, and wanted to bring them to your attention. Thanks to everyone that has suggested sites, and please, keep them coming! If there’s a helpful website or great community out there, I want to list it. Reference resource Eye ResourcesContinue reading “New eyecare links on the resources page”
Patching in the Pre-K
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who left kind words and advice on my last post. It really meant a lot to me. Zoe started patching at daycare the same day that she moved from the preschool room to the pre-kindergarten room. When I emailed the daycare center the day we learned she’dContinue reading “Patching in the Pre-K”
book about patching awarded the Schneider Family Book award by the American Library Association
The American Library Association announced its 2010 Youth Media Awards this week. One of the awards, the Schneider Family Book award “honors an author or illustrator for the artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.” This year’s Schneider Family Book award for children’s books was awarded to “The Pirate of Kindergarten”Continue reading “book about patching awarded the Schneider Family Book award by the American Library Association”
why the vision screening at the pediatrician’s office wasn’t good enough
Zoe had her 4 year old well-child visit a month and a half ago. At that visit, they did the normal preschool vision and hearing screenings. I was pretty interested to see how they differ from the actual exams, as Zoe’s had full exams of both her eyes and ears in the past 6 months.Continue reading “why the vision screening at the pediatrician’s office wasn’t good enough”

vision-related charities
It’s the end of 2010, and I know that a lot of people do end-of-year charitable giving. If that’s you, and you’re looking for charities to support, please consider contributing to organizations that help prevent blindness and restore sight. We all know how important vision can be, and how treatable and preventable many vision problemsContinue reading “vision-related charities”
Past worries and current realities
Three years ago, Zoe got her glasses. It was the day after Christmas – she was 14 months old. She wore the glasses well for a while in the store, and I was optimistic that getting her to wear them might actually be easy. Hah. She didn’t wear them so much the rest of thatContinue reading “Past worries and current realities”
