Reader question: Pediatric Ophthalmologist recommendation in New York State

This question just came in from Queenie.  I’ve tossed around the idea of starting a page where people could list references to ophthalmologists, optometrists, optical shops and others that they recommend, but I’m not sure if that’s opening a can of worms or not.  -Ann Z

Our eight-months old child has just been diagnosed with infantile esotropia and needs eye muscle surgery. However, the current waiting time for surgery is about 10 months in our country (i.e. Canada). We would like to bring her to US for consultation and possibly for surgery. Could anyone recommend a reputable pediatric ophthalmologist in New York State? Thanks.

  1. Sorry, I don’t know of any good pediatric ophtomologists in NY State, but our daughter also has infantile esotropia. If you have any questions about her treatment and the possible outcomes, I will be glad to answer them. She is now three ,and we are still working hard on improving her vision as well as the eye turn. I don’t know where you are in Canada, but there is a lady that is putting together a forum for parents and doctors because her daughter has strabismus as well. Her website is theeyeofthetigger.com, and she is in Toronto, I believe. All the best to you and your daughter!

  2. You should go to Children’s Hospital in Boston, there are a lot of parents on a forum that i visit that travel from upstate NY, Vermont and New Hampshire to Boston for their child’s vision care. Our daughter sees Dr. Deborah Vanderveen. Boston has some of the top doctors in the country. Mia had her 1st surgery when she was 1 month old, and 6 additional surgeries before she turned 1. Dr. Vanderveen performed all of her surgeries.

    Thanks,
    Danielle
